Positive Behavior Support Plan

The WESM School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Plan is intended as a resource for faculty/staff and other stakeholders. It summarizes the school’s operational procedures related to safety, discipline, and disciplinary intervention.

Every student has the right to be educated in a safe, respectful and welcoming environment. Every educator has the right to teach in an atmosphere free from disruption and obstacles that impede learning. This will be achieved at the Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets (WESM) through the adoption and implementation of a “Positive Behavior Support Plan.” (PBSP)

Our school level discipline plan is consistent with the LAUSD Discipline Foundation Policy, consisting of “The Culture of Discipline: Guiding Principles for the School Community” and” “Culture of Discipline: Student Expectations”.  The policy includes: teaching rules and social/emotional skills, reinforcing appropriate student behavior strategies by providing early intervention for misconduct and appropriate use of consequences.

School-wide positive behavior support is based on research which indicates that the most effective discipline systems use proactive strategies designed to prevent discipline problems.  Before consequences are given, students must first be supported in learning the skills necessary to enhance a positive school climate and avoid negative behavior. In the event of misconduct, there is to be the appropriate use of consequences. Ongoing monitoring shall be used to ensure that equitable school-based practices are implemented in a fair, non-discriminatory and culturally responsive manner.

Our PBSP has been adopted under the auspices of the School Leadership Council and are consistent with state and federal laws that require school administrators to utilize positive interventions as means of correction.
