Westchester is home to one of the best boys' basketball programs--not only in Los Angeles--but also in the country. With the help of a fine coaching staff and many standanding players over the years, Head Coach Ed Azzam has accumulated over 700 wins in his 32 years at the helm of this legendary program.
The Comets have six California State Division I titles, 11 Los Angeles City titles, and 18 Western League titles. Even more impressive is that Westchester's basketball program has graduated over 80 students who have gone on to recieve Division I NCAA scholarships.
Many former Comet basketball players have gone on to play in the National Basketball Association. Two former players are currently experiencing success in the NBA. Trevor Ariza (Class of 2003) plays for the New Orleans Hornets, and Amir Johnson (Class of 2005) plays for the Toronto Raptors.
Coach Azzam's primary focus is to build character and to develop student athletes who become fine young men. More important than wins and losses, Westchester players have a willingness to learn, which makes teaching more enjoyable for all involved. Expectations are always high for Comet basketball players--in the classroom as well as on the court.
When school starts in September, we expect our athletes to come to school in shape, prepared for our pre-season conditioning program. Tryouts for returning and new players are held the first two weeks of school. At that time, players are selected for the Comet basketball teams (Varsity, Junior Varsity, and Frosh/Soph).
