Am Lit Independent Reading Project Criteria

AP Independent Reading Project

Paper Format and Presentation Criteria

Paper

You have had ample time to select a major work of American Literature to read and should be well begun by now. If you have procrastinated and haven’t started reading yet you should make it a priority to choose a book, get it approved by me, and start reading.

Your paper should be at least three pages, single-spaced, Times New Roman  12 point font only. You must organize your paper in the standard format, with an assertive thesis in the last sentence of the intro paragraph, a body of evidence containing concrete detail and commentary ending with a brilliant conclusion.

Your paper should focus on how the author has been influenced by the major paradigms of American Literature. One way to organize your paper is to comment on the author’s STYLE, TONE, MAJOR THEMES, INFLUENCES, LITERARY IMPORTANCE, ETC.. Abrief bio might be helpful.

Be sure to cite the text illustrating your major points. Use the MLA format with a Works Cited page to cite sources. HERE IS MLA FORMAT

Presentation

Five minute oral presentation in front of the class, must include POWERPOINT presentation with at LEAST 10 slides including text and images supporting your paper’s thesis. PowerPoint Presentation must be legible, light colored font on a darker background works best.

Most people do not read more than five of text per slide so DO NOT PUT MORE THAN FIVE LINES OF TEXT ON ANY SLIDE. IF YOU NEED MORE ROOM ADD ANOTHER SLIDE. MAKE SURE THE TEXT IS LARGE ENOUGH TO BE VISIBLE AND CONTRASTS WITH THE BACKGROUND SO IT CAN BE READ EASILY.

Suggestion for organizing your presentation: Teach the class about the author’s life, the work you read, and the way it shaped the American Literary landscape.

THESE ARE TWO MAJOR ASSIGNMENTS AND TOGETHER MAKE UP A SIGNIFICANT PORTION OF YOUR FIRST SEMESTER GRADE. FOR SOME OF YOU THESE ASSIGNMENTS WILL DETERMINE WHETHER YOU PASS OR FAIL.
